My first term at Imperial College London
Sat Dec 13 2025
Coming to Imperial, being my dream uni, I was full of excitement, having thoroughly researched all the societies on offer and the modules I'd be taking. From living in South Kensington, to being part of awesome student societies full of some of the most intelligent and enthusiastic people I've met, my experience so far @ Imperial has been absolutely mind-blowing.
My modules
Being an EIE student, I take modules partaining to Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering & Computing. Although I've had a solid foundation in Computing before coming to Imperial, my experience in EE or CE before Imperial was nil. The amount I've learnt in a single term has been awesome - I've been able to take what I've learnt in my lectures and apply them the exact same week in my labs!
My favourite module so far has been Digital Electronics & Computer Architecture, from starting with simple digital electronics, to implementing state machines in Issie, its been a blast, particularly with my interest in FPGA and improving computing efficiency.
I've since actually borrowed an FPGA from the department to experiment with (they were kind enough to lend me a £300 Pynq board!).
Student societies
I've been fortunate enough to be part of some awesome student societies: ICRS (Imperial College Robotics Society), Project Stratus (an awesome weather ballooning society aiming to ride wind currents) and UniBots.
At Project Stratus, we've been hard at work on sensor firmware, funky parachute tests and developing reinforcement learning models to ride wind currents. Me personally, I've worked on C code to read data from our sensors and log it, and constructing & debugging electronics.
Being part of the Robotics Society has also been awesome. Having seen the ICRS lab multiple times at open days and an offer holder day, it was epic to finally start using it, both for projects such as Stratus but also for my own personal projects.
Living in South Kensington
South Kensington, while certainly expensive, has been an absolute joy to live in. The wide array of food to enjoy at an affordable price (thanks to TooGoodToGo) plus the insane amount of things to do in London is an amazing chance to get away from Imperial's crazy workload.
